The History of Brake Pad Technology
Your Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, or Maserati may have the best braking technology available, but the high tech rotors and disks haven’t always been available. In years past, many different technologies were used. Over the last 100 years, the archaic system have evolved into the high tech and higher performance systems in place today.
If you’re seeking the best quality and price for brake pads and rotors for your Rolls Royce, Bentley, or Maserati contact us today.
If you can believe it, the original brake pads were made of wood and a simple lever! We doubt you’ll want to try a new set of Pine Rotors on your exotic today!
In 1902, Louis Renault and Gottlieb Daimler invented and developed the first drum brake pads. These served as the foundation of the modern braking system and are still in use today. They’re inexpensive and often used in vehicles that don’t require high-performance braking.
Internal shoe brakes were an innovation that brought the mechanisms inside the vehicle’s frame. This protected it from the elements, dust, and water damage. It also increased performance by stabilizing the temperature of the brakes.
Hydraulic brakes provided another innovative step forward. These brakes were brought to the world by Malcolm Loughead and used fluids to transfer force to the brake pads. By the late 1920’s nearly all vehicles were using a hydraulic braking system.
The next big advancement were disk brakes. These are of course the type used on Rolls Royce, Bentley, and Maserati vehicles. William Lanchester patented the disk brake in 1902, but did not become popular until the auto industry’s boom in the 1950’s. As the weight and speed of cars increased, the need for better brakes increased.
But, disk brakes weren’t the final innovation in modern braking. Today’s brakes use advanced anti-lock or ABS technology. These systems monitor the speed and brake pressure of a vehicle to predict a skid. When this happens, hydraulic valves release to prevent the brakes from locking up.
